Die Trümmerfrau

Main character design for a fictional game called "Schutt und Rache". The action takes place in Berlin, at the end of the spring of 1945. The Red Army occupies the city, Germany has surrendered, and the war is over. Resources are scarce, people are hopeless, and—as was often the case after military conquests—many women have been raped by Russian soldiers.

Martha is a German Trümmerfrau, a "rubble woman", conscripted to clear the streets of the ruined city after the war, like many of her compatriots. During the day, she carries rubbles, performs tasks at the request of the Soviet occupiers, gathers supplies, and collects items to build weapons. During the night, despite fatigue, she takes her revenge...

Special thanks to Jenny Wang, Alex O'Dowd, Rodolphe Gendrault, Sean Vo, and Anna de Cicco for their feedback along the process!

By day, she wears a pillowcase as a head scarf, and at night, she unfolds it into a mask and holds it in place with a rope.

Final design (in the color version, I made some changes to the suspenders, the scissors belt fixation, and the mask rope)
